Welding Gas

Gas expands as temperature increases and lowers as the ambient temperature drops. This will result in a lower pressure reading. Chorley Bottle Gas Ltd cylinder pressure ratings are filled based on 15ºC

Perform a check on your system for leaks, if a leak cannot be found it may be that you have your flow rate set too high. Make sure you turn the cylinder off by its valve when you are finished using it, as even a small leak can empty your cylinder over time.

No, although our nitrogen is 99.995% pure and free from oxygen, we cannot guarantee that it is suitable for food preparation or for food grade use.

Balloon Gas / Helium

The simple explanation is...

Helium is naturally occurring. The helium we use for balloons and other uses mainly comes from mining underground gas pockets of helium.

Helium is extracted in a few places in the world, namely USA, Algeria, Russia and Qatar – the largest contributors of helium to the world markets.

The scientific explanation is....

Helium is the second-most common element in the universe; in our solar system it is mostly on the sun. The helium found on Earth was created over millions of years by the decay of metals and elements underground On Earth it is relatively rare — 5.2 ppm by volume in the atmosphere. Most terrestrial helium present today is created by the natural radioactive decay of heavy radioactive elements (thorium and uranium, although there are other examples), as the alpha particles emitted by such decays consist of helium-4 nuclei. This radiogenic helium is trapped with natural gas in concentrations up to 7% by volume, from which it is extracted commercially by a low-temperature separation process called fractional distillation. Previously, terrestrial helium was thought to be a non-renewable resource because once released into the atmosphere, it readily escapes into space. However, recent studies suggest that helium is produced deep in the earth by radioactive decay, and that large untapped reserves may exist under the Rocky Mountains in North America and in natural gas reserves.

General Facts

» Chemical symbol: He
» Second lightest elemental gas, after hydrogen
» Smallest of all molecules
» Lowest boiling point of any element (-452.1°F, -268.9°C, 4.2 K, 7.6 R)
» Seven times lighter than air
» Conducts sound three times faster than air
» Has five times air's thermal conductivity
» Does not become radioactive under irradiation

Physical Properties

» Colourless
» Odourless
» Tasteless
» Non-toxic
» Inert
» Non-flammable
» Slightly soluble in water
» High thermal conductivity

In the Environment

» Helium is produced continually by the radioactive decay of uranium and other elements, gradually working its way into the atmosphere
» Helium atoms are light enough to escape the Earth's gravitational field and into space
» Commercial extraction from air is impractical because helium's concentration is only about five parts per billion

Yes! Breathing helium can, in fact, kill you — but not because of the helium, rather because the lack of oxygen when you inhale the helium. As you breathe in a balloon full of helium, you are not breathing in any oxygen, which your cells need - usually we get this from the air we breathe.

It is not safe to inhale helium from a balloon (several times in a row). Helium is an asphyxiant. If you breathe mostly helium, it will suffocate you and you will die. Taking a single suck of helium from a balloon so you will talk funny is not dangerous.

HI-FLOAT balloon treatment is a solution of a plastic material dissolved in water. It forms a coating inside latex balloons that greatly reduces helium or air loss. With ULTRA HI-FLOAT, party decorations can be prepared a day ahead of time,.

The answer is NO. You have to fill up your helium latex balloons 2-3 hrs before your party, unless you are treating them with HI-Float first, then they should stay up for 48 hours.

Balloons don't float for a number of reasons. A balloon must be inflated with helium for it to float. If it still does not float, make sure that you are blowing the balloon up to its full size. An under inflated balloon is the most common reason for a balloon not to float. Do not fill a balloon smaller that 9" with helium as they only float for a few hours.

Some very cheap plastic balloons will not float when filled with Helium / balloon gas. This is due to a poor design and manufacture where the weight of the balloon exceeds the lift of the helium gas.

There are many different factors that can affect how long your balloons will stay afloat for. This can depend on the quality and type of the balloons, the ambient temperature of where you have the balloons but in general terms the float times are as follows:

Balloon types

Latex 11” 9-10 hrs

Latex 11” With Hi-FLOAT - 48hrs

Foils 18” 3-4days (brands with XL (Extra Life ) will float approx 3 weeks.

Bubbles- 3-4 weeks

You can store your balloon gas (cylinder) indoors or outdoors in an upright position.

For more safety information relating to balloon gas cylinders please refer to our safety information section.

No. Helium is an extremely light gas (its density is 0.169 kg/m3) and is therefore very volatile. It is colourless, odourless, non-flammable and completely inert. It cannot sustain life.

The helium balloon displaces an amount of air (just like the empty bottle displaces an amount of water). As long as the weight of the helium plus the balloon fabric is lighter than the air it displaces, the balloon will float in the air. It turns out that helium is a lot lighter than air so therefore it floats!! Simple !!

Balloon gas is a mixture of Helium and air.

High grade helium prolongs the float time of balloons.

Chorley Bottle Gas Ltd supplies only the best quality high grade Helium.

Unfortunately you will be unable to receive a refund without your original deposit receipt as proof of purchase. Please keep this safe!

Containers should be stored upright in a well ventilated area.
Containers should be properly secured to prevent toppling or rolling.

All our balloon gas cylinders are filled on site to the correct capacity and checked before they leave our depot. We have strict procedures in place to ensure all cylinders are filled to the correct pressure and tested before a customer takes them.
In the unlikely event your cylinder is low on balloon gas then it must have had a leak from somewhere. In that situation when you return the cylinder to us, let us know of your concern and we will check the cylinder at our earliest convenience and if it is found to be faulty then we will refund part of your money.
You must make sure you turn the cylinder off by its valve when not in use or you have you are finished using it, as even a small leak through the inflator or valve can empty your cylinder over time. Helium molecules are that tiny that they can escape through the smallest of holes/leaks.

Beer and Beverage Gas Cylinders for Public Use

There are two gases used for your keg beers and ciders. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Nitrogen (N2). CO2 makes the beer gassy – N2 makes the beer creamy. Think standard Lager vs Stout. These gases are mixed together for the desired result for a particular beer / cider.

If your keg is Tetley’s Smooth flow, John Smith’s Extra Smooth or Guinness then it will have a high concentration of Nitrogen Gas and a low concentration of Carbon Dioxide Gas.

If your keg is a lager or cider such as Carling, Stella Artois or Strongbow, Stella Cidre it will have a very high level of Carbon Dioxide and a very low level of Nitrogen. For these it’s perfectly ok, and gets perfect results, to use 100% CO2 at the correct balance of pressure.

Guinness, Tetley’s Smoothflow and John Smith’s Extra Smooth always use mixed gas of a concentration of 30% Carbon Dioxide and 70% Nitrogen. The mixed gas is supplied pre-mixed together in the same cylinder and we call this a cylinder of ‘30-70 mixed gas’.

It is always best to get advice from your beer keg supplier for more accurate advice.

Perform a check on your system for leaks, if a leak cannot be found it may be that you have your flow rate set too high. Make sure you turn the cylinder off by its valve when you are finished using it, as even a small leak can empty your cylinder over time.

LPG Gas Cylinders Propane, Butane and Patio Gas

The deposits on Harris Gas cylinders is £40.00.

This is fully refundable when you decide to return the cylinder and no longer need it.

You MUST have the original paperwork to prove you have paid the deposit or no deposit will be returned.

No.

We are no longer a Calor Gas dealer.

You need to take this up with Calor Gas and you will have your original paperwork to show the hire charge paid.

Cylinders have the empty tare weight painted/printed on their neck, this gives the weight of the cylinder in kilograms. Once you have the empty weight of the cylinder you weigh the full cylinder on scales, then subtract the empty weight from the cylinder weight. This will give you the weight of gas left in the cylinder, which can then be compared with a full cylinder, e.g. 12kg.

All bottles will vary depending on their size. The weight is printed / painted on the neck of the cylinder in Kilograms. This is the weight of the empty cylinder.

Yes, you will need to pay a cylinder deposit of £40.00 which covers the cost and maintenance of the gas cylinder.

Cabinet Heaters

Once your heater is securely connected to your gas bottle and ready for use, it is important to make sure that it is operated safely. The following points outline the main considerations to think about when using your gas heater this winter, follow these points and you will have many years of safe and trouble free use from your cabinet heater:

Always turn your heater off before going to bed or leaving your property.

Ensure all the component parts of your unit are well maintained e.g. the heater, regulator, hose, hose connectors.

Do not use aerosols or flammable cleaning liquids or sprays in close proximity to the heater.

Avoid sitting or standing too close to your heater.

Always ensure that the room in use is well ventilated; if it becomes stuffy open windows and doors to allow fresh air in immediately.

Always follow manufacturer guidelines carefully.

Ensure that the position of your heater is away from any flammable materials and is not blocking any escape routes.

Never place clothes or other items over your heater.

Do not move your unit whilst it is in use.

If you suspect a gas leak or there is a fire follow our emergency guidelines

The key to positioning your portable gas heater safely is to choose a spacious and well-ventilated room. Any furniture, curtains or other combustible materials should be arranged at least 1 metre away from the heater to prevent the risk of any items overheating and causing a fire. Many people choose to use their portable gas heater in their living rooms as this is where they spend most of their time at home and can benefit most from the heat provided. This is also often the most suitable room for use; providing the appliance with the space and oxygen levels it needs to function correctly.

For safety reasons we would specifically advise against locating your portable gas heater in any of the following locations:

Your garage or shed

For some, the thought of using a portable gas heater in their garage or garden shed can be appealing, particularly if they are spending time working in these chilly locations. However, with various flammable materials being commonly stored here, it is vital to never use a portable gas heater in these areas.

Bathrooms or showers

Warming your bathroom or shower room during the colder months can be an attractive thought, but we recommend against the use of a portable gas heater in these rooms. This is due to their size, which is often too small to offer sufficient ventilation for a gas appliance.

Your bedroom

Although tempting, never position your portable gas heater in any bedrooms in your home, as there is often an abundance of readily-combustible material in these rooms. This includes bedclothes and coverings, curtains, and soft toys; all of which could be at risk of becoming a fire hazard when placed near a portable gas heater.

High rise flats

LPG cylinders should not be used under any circumstances in high rise unstrengthened large panel system built flats. Mobile heaters may only be used in flats of traditional construction with up to four storeys including any basement storey. If you live in a high rise flat of traditional construction above four storeys tall, you must not use portable gas heaters. Many tenancy agreements for these types of property will forbid their use for this reason

Basements of cellars

As LPG vapour is heavier than air any leakage would accumulate in the basement or cellar and would have no means of dispersing. As a result, the storage of LPG cylinders or the usage of LPG appliances in a basement or cellar is not allowed.

Radiant heaters

Producing heat similar to that of a traditional log fire; portable radiant heaters work by emitting warmth that transfers to the objects surrounding it. They can be used to heat a variety of rooms and spaces, but mustn’t be used in basements, cellars, bedrooms, bathrooms or garages. It is best to avoid their use in rooms subjected to breezes as severe drafts can effect the flame stability.

As an essential safety feature, most radiant heaters will have an “atmosphere sensing pilot light” that monitors the air surrounding the heater and turns the heater off if insufficient oxygen is available.

Real flame heaters

Offering the benefit of a flame but without the inconvenience of a real fire, this form of heater works in the same way as the radiant variety. The only difference is the way the heat is emitted; being radiated by the flames and artificial coals or logs and not a heater plaque. Real flame heaters also have an “atmosphere sensing pilot light” that monitors the air surrounding the heater and turns the heater off if insufficient oxygen is available

Catalytic heaters

A portable catalytic heater comprises of a metal grill, and mesh lined with platinum or other catalyst. A valve controls the flow of gas through the mesh which creates heat that is absorbed and radiated by the metal grill. The metal grill then convects the heat and emits infra-red waves, just like a standard infrared or radiant heater. This type of heater is ideal for use in public spaces or areas with a lot of footfall.
